Liptovska Mara is a dam close to the Liptvosky Mikulas city.
It was build in 1965-1975. The area of the dam is 22 km² and the depth at the deepest point is 45m. Considering the amount of water, it is the biggest dam in Slovakia with the volume of water of 360 mil. m³. It lies on the Vah river. During the opening of this dam, some villages had to be flooded completely (Liptovská Mara, (Old) Liptovská Sielnica, Paludza, Parizovce, Sokolce, Vrbie), and some also partialy (Bobrovnik, Liptovsky Trnovec, Benice-part Cemice).
The main function of this dam is protection against floods, but it also creates electricity. There are 4 water turbines with the capacity of 198 MW. The recreational function of this place is much underused (recreational are close to Liptovsky Trnovec village and closely located Aquapark Tatralandia).Source: http://sk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liptovsk%C3%A1_Mara_%28priehrada%29
